BEACH SWEEP/ RIVER SWEEP 2007
The annual “Beach Sweep/River Sweep” was held across the country Saturday,
September 15th. The environmental concerns of trash thrown into and along the
shores of our lakes and streams are taken to heart by volunteers.
In Fairfield County, more than 15 miles of shoreline at Lake Wateree were covered in
the sweep. A group of 19 (or more) volunteers picked up approximately 73 trash
bags full of litter that was thoughtlessly left behind by others. This totaled about
2,200 pounds and consisted of:

486 cigarette butts
22 cigarette lighters

• Plastic bottles - 450 years
• Fishing line - 600 years
• Disposable diaper - 450 years
• Aluminum can - 80-200 years
